A BeppoSAX observation of the massive X-ray binary 4U 1700-37

A 0.5–200 keV BeppoSAX spectrum of the nonpulsating high-mass X-ray binary 4U 1700-37 is presented. The spectrum is well characterized by the standard accreting pulsar model of an absorbed power-law with a photon index of 1.07±0.02 0.03, sharply modified by an exponential cutoff above 5.9 ± 0.2 keV. The e-folding energy of the cutoff is 23.9 ± 0.5 keV. A soft bremsstrahlung component with a tem...

A Clumpy Stellar Wind and Luminosity-dependent Cyclotron Line Revealed by the First Suzaku Observation of the High-mass X-ray Binary 4u 1538−522

We present results from the first Suzaku observation of the high-mass X-ray binary 4U 1538−522. The broad-band spectral coverage of Suzaku allows for a detailed spectral analysis, characterizing the cyclotron resonance scattering feature at 23.0± 0.4 keV and the iron Kα line at 6.426± 0.008 keV, as well as placing limits on the strengths of the iron Kβ line and the iron K edge. We track the evo...

Wind accretion in the massive X-ray binary 4U 2206+54: abnormally slow wind and moderately eccentric orbit

Massive X-ray binaries are usually classified depending on the properties of the donor star in classical, supergiant and Be X-ray binaries, the main difference being the mass transfer mechanism between the two components. The massive X-ray binary 4U 2206+54 does not fit in any of these groups, and deserves a detailed study to understand how the transfer of matter and the accretion on to the com...
